B. Sketches of Focal Subjects

This is Mikes sketch of the main subject of this studio demonstration plus some other cow sketches to possibly be used as secondary images in the painting.  Mike used graphite on a 9" x 12" sketch pad which is the same 3/4 dimension of his oil painting demonstration which will be 36" x 48".

The sketch not only gives him a feeling for the images to be used but also for placement on the actual painting canvas.  He uses the same dimensional sketches even when doing small plein air or live model studies.  Most of these, however, are done by peering through a small dimensional view finder and creating a small thumb nail sketch the same dimensions that the view finder is set at.
